Samuel Matos, Jr. Obituary

Samuel Leon Matos Jr., affectionately known as Sam or Matos, left this world on May 31, 2025, in Edinburg, Texas, at the age of 49. He was born on November 18, 1975, in North Tarrytown, New York. Samuel’s life journey took him from the snowy landscapes of Anchorage, Alaska, to the vibrant streets of San Antonio, Texas, and finally to the Rio Grande Valley, where he fell in love, built a family, a home, and a legacy.

He met Mabel through a mutual friend in Harlingen, Texas, and after a movie on their first date, he proposed the very next day—his heart already certain of the life they would build together. What followed were long phone calls, shared laughter, and a bond grounded in deep faith and love.

He was a fierce advocate for young people, dedicating his work as a Program Supervisor with the Texas Juvenile Justice Department to supporting youth in crisis. He held an Associate’s degree in Information Technology and was actively pursuing a degree in Social Work. Behind the badge and the titles was a man who led with heart, humor, and a faith that never wavered.

In addition to his career, Samuel found deep fulfillment through his music ministry, Soul Recruiter, where he used music to uplift and inspire. Yet, his greatest joy in life was his role as a husband and father—raising his two daughters was his highest calling. Xitlaly and Nayeli were the center of his world. Being their dad was his proudest achievement.

Samuel brought laughter into every room and strength into every storm. A man of God, a father who showed up for every moment, and a husband who loved deeply—his presence was a gift, and his absence leaves a space that words can’t fill.

Thank you to the exceptional medical teams at MD Anderson, DHR (main hospital, rehab and hospice) as well as Arborview Skilled Nursing Facility for their outstanding care and support.

Samuel will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his joyful sense of humor, and his enduring love for his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Mabel Cortina-Matos; his cherished daughters, Xitlaly and Nayeli; his father, Samuel Matos Sr.; and his brother, Sean Deloatch. He was preceded in death by his mother, Daisy Swift.
