Roberto Hernandez, age 71, of Edinburg, Texas, passed away on July 3, 2026. He was born on May 18, 1955, in Olton, Texas, and lived a life marked by warmth, devotion, and a deep love for the people around him.
Roberto was a friendly, loving, and spirited man whose presence brought comfort and joy to his family and friends. He treasured time spent with those he loved most and found happiness in the simple moments that made life meaningful. Family gatherings were especially dear to him, and he was happiest when surrounded by the laughter, conversation, and togetherness of the people he held close to his heart.
He enjoyed many pastimes that reflected his practical nature and his appreciation for the familiar comforts of home. Roberto loved barbecue, watching old cowboy movies, and eating ice cream. He had a knack for super gluing anything and everything that was broken, and he took pride in fixing what others might have set aside. He also enjoyed working on electronics and he could often be found listening to Paul Harvey. These interests were part of what made him unique and memorable to all who knew him.
Roberto is survived by his wife, Martha Hernandez Hernandez; his children, Nelda Yvette Mercado and her husband Carlos, Roberta Yvonne Sosa and her husband Larry, and Robert Hernandez and his wife LeAnne Reyna; his siblings, Refugio “Cuco” Hernandez, Ismael Hernandez and his wife Dora, David Hernandez, and Raul Hernandez and his wife Lindy; and his many beloved grandchildren, Anissa Yvonne Mercado, Larissa Yvette Mercado, Carissa Lizette Mercado, Kylie Ann Ayala, Avery R. Hernandez, Manuel Ayala, Nylah Rianne Sosa, Treston James Sosa, Troy Austin Sosa, Aliyah Janett Ortegon, and Francisco Javier Ortegon. Numerous of nieces and nephews also survive Roberto.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ismael and Margarita Hernandez; his sister, Estela Ortiz Hernandez; and his nephew, Tomas Hernandez. Their memories remained an important part of his life and the family legacy he carried with pride.
Roberto’s life was one of steady love, quiet strength, and enduring devotion to family. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his easy smile, and the way he made others feel welcome and cared for. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the memories he created, and the many lives he touched throughout his years.
Though he will be deeply missed, Roberto Hernandez will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a blessing, and his memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to his family and friends for years to come.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 09, 2026 at Rivera Hillcrest, 1300 N. I69-C Frontage Rd in Edinburg from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a rosary at 6:00 pm. Funeral services will be Friday, July 10, 2026 at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg with burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery.
