Ramiro Anastacio Lopez Obituary

Ramiro Anastacio Lopez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2024 in Edinburg, TX.  Born to Blaza Lopez Castaneda and Anastacio Lopez on August 21, 1946, Ramiro spent a lifetime loving his family, his country, his community, and his Chicago Bears Football.

Ramiro’s early years consisted of spending summers with his parents and siblings, traveling to California and Indiana to harvest strawberries, grapes and tomatoes.  It was in those fields during extreme heat, that he learned the meaning of hard work, discipline, and perseverance.  It was also a reflection point for him (which he was always quick to emphasize to his grandchildren!), the importance of getting a college education, especially being a migrant, and how education could positively impact their future.

After graduating from PSJA High School in 1965, Ramiro went on to pursue a degree in Latin American Business and Accounting at Pan American College, graduating in 1970.  His career as an accountant led to many years working as an auditor or finance director at multiple governmental entities throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

On December 22, 1972, Ramiro married his college sweetheart, Irene Requenez and were married for 51 years.  Together, they raised their 2 children: Marcos Anastacio (Erica) Lopez and Carina Crystal (Phillip, Jr.) Veale.

In 2000, Ramiro accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Edinburg.  He was always eager to lend out a helping hand at church, whether it was being an usher, greeter, or volunteer at any church related function.  His love of Christ was evident in his daily life, serving as his guiding light in everything he did. He spent the last few years of his life as a member of Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen, TX.

Ramiro’s true legacy will always be reflected by the unconditional love he had for his grandchildren.  Alex, Trey, Camila, Emma and Sevy were his pride and joy. Whether it was just hanging out at family dinners (watching in splendor while Emma and Camila laughed and giggled with each other) or attending every sporting event, piano recital and school presentations.  They could always count on their “Grampy” being there with his McHi Bulldog or Memorial Mustang fan shirt. He loved them with everything he had.

Sadly,  Ramiro was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather Ramon Castaneda, sisters Angelita and Magdalena, brothers Ismael and Raul and sister-in-laws Juanita and Oralia.  His memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: his wife Irene; his children Marcos and Carina; his 5 loving grandchildren; and his brothers Eulalio (Bea) Lopez, Julian (Tina) Lopez, Ruben (Carolina) Lopez, Rolando (Maryann) Castaneda, sister-in-law Irene Lopez and many nieces and nephews.

The family has designated Fernando Lopez, Ruben Lopez, Jr., Julian Lopez, Jr., Robert J. Quintanilla, Randy Requenez, and Jesse Torres as pallbearers to accompany Ramiro on his final journey.

A memorial service to celebrate Ramiro’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 from 4:00-8:00 pm with a prayer service starting at 7:00 pm at Rivera at Hillcrest Funeral Home, located at 1300 N.
