Maria Lydia Betancourt, 93, of Edinburg, Texas, passed away on July 17, 2025. A lifelong resident, Lydia was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend—known for her warmth, kindness, and quiet strength.
Her life was marked by joy, service, and deep faith. Though her formal education ended in the 3rd grade, Lydia remained a lifelong learner. She worked for many years at Anthony's department store and made history as the first woman in Edinburg to earn a commercial driver’s license and operate a 16-foot truck.
A devoted Catholic, Lydia was an active Guadalupana member at St. Joseph the Worker Church in San Carlos, where her faith guided her through life's trials and triumphs and was a source of comfort and strength throughout the years. Her deep spirituality inspired her many acts of compassion and generosity.
Lydia’s creative spirit shone in her sewing, crocheting, and cooking. She crafted clothing with pride, crocheted blankets full of love, you could often find her in her favorite recliner, needle and thread in hand, pouring love into every stitch. She brought family together with her legendary bunuelos and tamales. She also loved dancing, embracing life with joy and energy. One of her greatest joys was sharing stories of her past—vivid memories of family, work, and community that reminded loved ones of where they came from and who they are.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sotero Fidel Betancourt, son Fidel Rafael Betancourt, parents Bernabe and Marta Maldonado Rodriguez, and siblings Rodrigo, Ramiro, Frank, Pete, and Isidra. She is survived by her sister, Antonia (Andres) Mata, two grandchildren, Josiah and Antoinette Betancourt, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Rivera at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1300 N. I-69C, Edinburg. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 21, at St. Joseph the Worker Church in San Carlos, followed by interment at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna.
In her final days, Lydia reflected on her journey with peace and pride, saying, “I had a good life and I loved it. I am proud of myself.” Her legacy of love, faith, and kindness lives on in the many lives she touched.
