Maria Elena Quintanilla Obituary

Maria Elena Quintanilla, a beacon of love and laughter, passed away on September 19, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of courage, creativity and strength. Born on March 10, 1950, in Edinburg, Texas, Maria's life was a vibrant journey that touched the hearts of all who knew her.

Maria's story is one of unwavering strength and an infectious spirit that uplifted everyone around her. She graduated from Edinburg High School before transforming her passion for beauty into a lifelong vocation, having honed her skills at Cosmetology School. Her career blossomed at Haggars and Alma's Hi-Fashion Salon, where her talent and dedication were as clear as her joy in helping others feel beautiful.

Maria's interests extended beyond her professional endeavors, as she found solace and delight in the simple pleasures of gardening, reading, and sewing. Each plant she nurtured in her garden was a testament to her patience and care, and her handmade crafts were ingrained with the love and attention only she could provide. Her wit would shine through in the stories she read and the jokes she shared, leaving a lasting impression of her funny and lively character.

Maria's essence can best be described by three simple yet profound words: loving, funny, and courageous. She loved deeply and without reservation, her heart a safe haven for her family and friends. Her humor was a light that never dimmed, brightening the darkest of days with her quick wit and infectious laughter. “And her courage”? It was the cornerstone of her existence, carrying her through life's challenges with the grace of a warrior.

Her family was the masterpiece of her life's canvas. She is survived by her adoring children: Criselda M. Sanchez and her husband Oscar M. Sanchez Jr., Viviana Michelle Mora-Hirlas and her husband John Kelly Hirlas, Adriana Marie Correa-Hernandez and her husband Antonio Hernandez, and her cherished son Gerardo Quintanilla. Maria was also the proud grandmother to Dr. Jenika Renee Sanchez-Junot, married to Jordan Junot; Oscar M. Sanchez, III; Hunter Ramirez; Kelly Michelle Hirlas; and Jodie Faith Correa. Her legacy continues to bloom with her great-granddaughters, Rylie Ellianna Sanchez-Junot and Raelyn Alexandra Sanchez-Junot.

To know Maria was to witness a life lived to its fullest, with every moment an opportunity for growth, learning, and laughter. She approached life like her garden, cultivating relationships with tenderness and nurturing each connection with love and attention. Her laughter was the music in the memories she created, dancing through the lives of her family, friends, and all she encountered.

Maria's spirit, a harmonious blend of humor and heart, will echo through the stories told by her children, grandchildren and the smiles of her great-granddaughters. Her legacy is a tapestry woven with threads of compassion, resilience, and an unwavering zest for life that will inspire generations to come.

Let us honor Maria Elena Quintanilla by embracing her example: to live courageously, love generously, and laugh heartily. Her journey on earth has concluded, but her impact is everlasting, her memory a treasure chest of lessons in love, strength, and joy.

As we reflect on the life of Maria, let us carry her light within us, perpetuating her spirit through acts of kindness, the pursuit of our passions, and an embrace of the beauty in every moment. Maria's story is not one of finality but a continuing narrative of inspiration; her radiant soul will forever guide us to cultivate beauty in our lives and the lives of others, just as she did with every step she took.
