Luciano "Chano" Martinez Jr.

Luciano Martínez Jr., known affectionately by friends and family as Chano, passed away at his home in Edinburg, Texas, on January 17, 2024, at the age of 61. Born on January 23, 1962, also in Edinburg, he was a lifelong resident of the city he adored. Chano was the beloved husband of Sonia Romero Martínez, and a cherished father to his daughter, Valerie M. Rivera. His role as a father extended with love and guidance to his son-in-law, Orlando Javier (OJ) Rivera, and to his grandson, Aaron Daniel Rivera.

Chano was predeceased by his father, Luciano Martínez Sr., and is survived by his mother, Virginia Luna. He leaves behind a loving family that includes his siblings, Sofía Perez and Jaime Martinez, as well as his sister-in-law, Rosie Martinez. His warm presence will be profoundly missed by his nieces, nephews, and the countless friends he made throughout his life.

Chano's generosity and kindness were the cornerstones of his life. His loving nature extended into his work of the popular local sports lounge, Chano’s, where he was a friend to all who often walked in. His establishment was more than a business; it was a place where memories were made, friendships were established, and laughter filled the room.

Described by those who knew him as generous, loving, and kind, Chano lived his life with a spirit of giving that touched the hearts of many. He was a man who found joy in the happiness of others, and his legacy of love and selflessness will continue to inspire those he has left behind.

As we say farewell to Chano, his memory will live on in the stories shared over a drink at Chano’s, in the jokes and laughter he shared with many, and in the love that fills the hearts of his family and friends.

Chano’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Edinburg community for embracing Chano and for the support shown during this difficult time. His life is a beautiful depiction of the relationships he nurtured and the generous heart he shared.

A gathering of family and friends will be on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm with the recital of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM at Rivera Hillcrest Funerals and Cremations of Edinburg. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Edinburg. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Rivera at Hillcrest Funerals and Cremations of Edinburg.
