Juan Armando Cadena, a man of the earth and the open sky, embarked on his final journey on April 30, 2024, in Houston, TX, at the age of 52. Born July 7, 1971, in Alice, TX, Juan's life was a testament of passion and strength of the human spirit. His infectious enthusiasm and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, students, and the great outdoors have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Family was the cornerstone of Juan's life. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his beloved wife, Amanda Sanchez Cadena, and his adored son, Nathan Wayne Cadena. His brother, Rupert (Olga) Cadena, sisters Rosalinda "Rosie" (Samuel) Gutierrez and Maria Antonia “Kiki” (Alan) Gonzalez, in-laws Oswaldo and Nora Sanchez, brother-in-law Oswaldo Sanchez II, sister-in-law Stephanie Sanchez, paternal aunts Norma (Adan) Martinez and Josefina Garcia, along with numerous nieces and nephews. They will forever cherish the memories and the joy that he brought into their lives. Juan was preceded in death by his parents, Liborio "Libo" Cadena and Antonia Lilia "Lile" Cadena, who undoubtedly welcomed their son with open arms into eternal peace.
Juan graduated from San Diego High School in 1989, setting the stage for his further education at A&M University-Kingsville, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science. Throughout his college years, Juan's work ethic shone brightly as he balanced his studies with various jobs, including the demanding role of a cowboy at the King Ranch and working at the Animal Medical Clinic in Kingsville with Dr. Underbink. His commitment to education and agriculture was not merely a career path but a reflection of his deep-seated values.
Following his time at the university, Juan dedicated four years to the San Diego Independent School District as an 8th grade science teacher at Bernarda Jaime Junior High. In 2004, Juan continued his teaching career at Weslaco Independent School District, as an 8th grade science teacher at Beatriz Garza Middle School. He became Weslaco High School’s Ag Teacher in 2013, where he touched the lives of countless students and FFA members. His passion for teaching was infectious, and he inspired a new generation to explore and respect the natural world.
The outdoors was Juan's sanctuary, where he found joy in hunting, fishing, and working on his ranch. His early love for horses, fostered by his Uncle Homero Sandoval, blossomed into a lifelong passion. Juan's evenings were often spent with his beloved horses, Cinco and Rooster, whether working on the ranch or indulging in his interest in team roping. His dedication to his equine companions was a reflection of the love he had for all living things.
Juan's character was one of warmth and generosity. He was a man who lived with a passionate heart, a friendly demeanor, and a loving spirit. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a cherished friend and respected mentor. Those who knew Juan would describe him as a passionate soul, a friendly face in any crowd, and a loving presence in the lives of his family and friends. He approached every day with an unwavering optimism and a determination to make the world a better place, one student, one seed, and one sunrise at a time.
Juan's journey may have reached its sunset, but the light he cast upon this world will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew him. Juan's story is not one of an end, but a beautiful reminder of the impact one person can have on the world. His spirit, like the vast Texas sky he so loved, was limitless and inspiring. Juan's story encourages us all to pursue our passions with vigor, to nurture the relationships we hold dear, to leave a positive imprint on the world, and keep the cowboy spirit alive in our hearts.
Rest in peace Juan Armando Cadena. There are hoof prints on the streets of gold ‘cause God called a cowboy home.
