Beloved Isabel Mejia, known affectionately as Bellie, was a radiant beacon of joy born under the Texan sun on May 31, 1953, in the humble town of Hebbronville. On September 6, 2024, our dear Bellie was called home to the Lord from Edinburg, Texas, leaving a legacy woven with threads of laughter, music, and faith.
Bellie was a cherished daughter, born to the late Alejandro Mejia Sr. and Maria Garza Mejia, who guided her with love and wisdom on the path of life. She was a sister like no other to Maria and spouse Miguel Porras, Carmela and +Jesus Carmona, Alejandro Mejia Jr. and spouse Blanca and Rafael Mejia and spouse Yolanda Dominguez. Her presence was a gift to her extended family of nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews, each of whom found a second mother in her boundless affection.
In her early years, Bellie attended school in Hebbronville, where she sowed the seeds of lifelong friendships and kindled her passion for service. She dedicated many years of her life to caring for others, first at the Hebbronville Nursing Home and then serving the community at the Stripes store in Hebbronville. Bellie also opened her heart and home as a provider, offering comfort and support to those in need.
Her spirit danced to the rhythm of life, finding joy in the melodies of music and the harmonious steps of dancing. Bellie's laughter could often be heard ringing out during her beloved bingo games or while trying her luck at the slot machines. She was a pillar of the La Palma Adult Center in Edinburg, where she cherished time spent with her dear friends Connie, Linda, and Alma.
Bellie's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. Every Sunday, she would attend church at St Jude in Pharr and make her pilgrimage to the San Juan Shrine, her spirit joining in holy communion with her Creator. Afterward, she would indulge in the earthly delight of a meal at Star Lite Burger in San Juan, her laughter mingling with the clatter of dishes and the chatter of fellow diners.
Words falter to encapsulate the essence of Bellie, but if one were to try, they would say she was faith-filled, loving, and funny. Her faith was as deep and wide as the Texas sky, her love as warm and encompassing as the southern sun, and her humor as refreshing as a gentle breeze on a hot summer day.
Today, we do not mourn Isabel "Bellie" Mejia; we celebrate her. We celebrate the light she shone upon this world, the love she lavished upon us, and the laughter she shared with us. We celebrate a life well-lived, a race well-run, and a faith well-kept.
As we gather to bid farewell to our beloved Bellie, let us hold her memory dear. Let us emulate her joy, her compassion, and her unwavering faith. And as she ascends to the heavenly choir, let us find comfort in knowing that her song will forever resonate in the halls of eternity.
Bellie has left the earthly confines of this world, but her spirit remains eternal, a guiding star in the vast expanse of the heavens. She has been reunited with her parents and now watches over us with the same love and tenderness she so generously gave in life.
We are all blessed to have known Isabel "Bellie" Mejia, and though she has departed from our sight, her spirit will continue to dwell in the hearts of those she touched. Let her life be a testament to the beauty of a soul surrendered to love, laughter, and faith. Amen.
