Elvira "Virita" Lopez Villarreal, a cherished wife, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, in Edinburg, Texas, at the age of 81. Born in Lopeno, Zapata County, Texas, on March 16, 1944, to the late Raul and Margarita Lopez, Elvira was a beacon of love and education in her community.

Virita, as she was affectionately known by those close to her, dedicated her life to the pursuit of knowledge and the nurturing of young minds. After graduating with a degree in English from Pan American University in 1966, she furthered her passion for helping others by obtaining a Master's degree in Counseling in 1973. Her career as an English and reading teacher, as well as a counselor with the Edcouch Elsa School District and later with the McAllen School District, left a lasting impact on countless students. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom as she taught CCD at Holy Family Church, where she was also an active member.

Elvira's love for her family was unparalleled. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raul and Margarita Lopez, and her brothers, Rodolfo and Fidel Lopez. Her legacy is carried on by her devoted husband of 44 years, Mr. Ricardo S. Villarreal, her brothers Raul Lopez Jr. and beloved Sergio Mandujano, and a host of extended family members and friends who were blessed to know her.

Virita's life was a testament to the values of love, selflessness, and generosity. She found joy in organizing family gatherings and was the heart of every celebration. Her kindness extended to driving her aunts and uncles to various destinations, ensuring they were part of the community and family events. Her love for her husband, Richard, was evident to all, as she cherished every moment spent by his side.

An avid reader, Elvira's thirst for knowledge was insatiable. She believed in the power of education to transform lives and instilled this belief in her students. Her selfless nature was also evident in her unwavering commitment to her faith and service to Holy Family Church.

Elvira "Virita" Lopez Villarreal will be remembered for her radiant smile, her warm embrace, and her boundless love for her family. Her memory will be treasured, and her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and the countless hearts she touched. Elvira's journey on earth has ended, but her legacy of love and dedication will endure forever.

Visitation will be Monday, December 29, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with the recital of the Holy Rosary at 6:30 PM at Rivera Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel,1300 N. I-69 C in Edinburg. Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 12:00 noon at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens cemetery in McAllen.
