McAllen, TX – Elida Bernal, beloved co-owner of Jesse’s Restaurant from 1983 to 2014, passed away on June 25, 2025. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a caring grandmother, and a supportive mother-in-law.
Elida was a guiding light to her daughters, modeling the values of motherhood and spousal support with grace and strength. She was nurturing, patient, and deeply affectionate toward her grandchildren, whom she cherished with all her heart.
As a wife and matriarch, her priorities were her husband, her four daughters, and her nine grandchildren. Her generosity extended to her entire family, and she consistently led with love and selflessness. Those who knew Elida would agree, she possessed a strong character and a compassionate heart. Through her actions, she taught her family that even with limited formal education, it is possible to achieve great things through determination and faith.
Elida supported all her daughters in pursuing their careers and education, caring for her grandchildren so they could balance their professional and personal lives. She served as a mentor and spiritual guide to each of them, encouraging them in their faith and always reminding her family to trust in God during difficult times, assuring them that He would guide their every step.
She is survived by her four daughters: Ana Dougherty (Alfred Dougherty), Nancy Reed (Jeff Reed), Edith Viña (Robert Viña III), and Janet Garcia (Carlos Garcia); and her nine beloved grandchildren: Keith Dougherty, Jean-Luke Ayala, Kevin J. Dougherty, Jeffrey Reed II, Karina Ayala, Elida Reed, Sarah Garcia, Katie Garcia, and Amelia Viña.
